Information provided by the Artist: Harry Lum (1930–2022), the son of Chinese immigrants, was raised in San Francisco's vibrant Chinatown. Lum earned his MA at University of California, Berkeley, in 1954. Influenced by Bay Area Figurative painters such as Paul Wonner and Richard Diebenkorn, Lum viewed figuration as a means to delve into the essence of humanity. A Fulbright scholarship took him to Paris from 1959 to 1960. Upon returning, he taught at UC Berkeley, Richmond Art Center, and Grossmont College in El Cajon, where he remained until his retirement in 1995 when he moved to Nevada City. Lum's artistic legacy spans six decades, marked by solo exhibitions at prestigious venues like the Mill College Art Museum, San Jose Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Art, the Berkeley, and Dana Reich Galleries. His work featured prominently in exhibitions at SFMOMA, Oakland Museum, Mills College Art Museum, The Fine Arts Museums, San Diego Museum of Art, and Gallery Paule Anglim. His work is in the Crocker Art Museum's permanent collection.
