Information provided by the Artist: Gina Werfel’s paintings echo the complexities of landscape, from underwater reflections to intersections of nature and architecture. Fragments appear in fluid, veiled spaces while clearly defined lines and stencils exist in tension with naturalistic gestures that fade in and out of focus, layered with glimpses of her environment that suggest fragments of memory. Contemporary dance provides a rhythmic metaphor. Choreography also suggests a metaphor of polyphony, of interwoven independent voices, or contrasting personas. Her solo exhibitions include the American University of Paris, France and Prince Street Gallery in NYC. Residencies include the American Academy in Rome, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Italy, the Djerassi Foundation, and Yosemite National Park. Werfel received her MFA at Columbia University, New York Studio School (Certificate) and Hamilton College (BA). She is Professor of Art Emerita at University of California, Davis.
