Information provided by the Artist: Investigating the ordinary is a pervasive theme in Martucci’s work. A figurative artist, she focuses on people and animals as her subject matter. In choosing everyday themes, Martucci seeks to represent thoughts, emotions, and simple truths. Martucci is best known for her use of dog imagery. Her animal themes brought her to a project with artist Judy Chicago. Working together, Martucci sculpted clay cats for Chicago to China paint. Martucci’s column series features a dog balanced on stacks raising them to eye level. “This elevation of the common object is very much in the tradition of Funk art absent the affronting banality that defined many of these works,” says ceramic historian Nancy Servis. Graduating from University of California, Davis, in 1983, Martucci studied with Robert Arneson, Manual Neri, and Wayne Thiebaud. She sculpted at ceramic lab TB-9 with a dynamic group of students including Lisa Reinertson, Arthur Gonzalez and Tony Natsoulas.
