Information provided by the Artist: Jonathan C. Lewis uses found ephemera, salvage, or reclaimed objects to create art box sculptures or assemblages. Without formal art training, he began his artmaking at age 7O. After rummaging through junkyards, thrift shops, or yard sales, he reports looking the part of the starving artist: dusty and disheveled. His mixed-media artworks, inspired by the visual artist Joseph Cornell, are in 72 private art collections. Prior to artmaking, he had several careers, including as a senior public servant in the California Legislature, as a social justice advocate, as an author (The Unfinished Social Entrepreneur) and as an art gallery owner. He self-describes as a Distinguished Artist-in-Residence which, he admits, only means that his studio is inside home. His artwork honors his father who, for most of his life, worked with his hands.
