Information provided by the Artist: Maryann Steinert-Foley was born in Flushing, New York in 1950. She completed a BA in Art Studio, with honors, at the University of California, Davis, in 2011 and received the Departmental Citation for Outstanding Performance from the UC Davis Art Department Faculty. Her interest is mainly in ceramic sculpture, but her work also includes paintings and drawings. Clay is her preferred sculptural medium due in no small part to the years she worked in the historically fertile and creative atmosphere of TB-9—a WWII-era temporary building on the UC Davis campus which still serves as a ceramics teaching facility and is widely considered to be the place where, beginning in the mid 1960s, Bob Arneson oversaw the elevation of ceramics from craft to fine art. The TB-9 idea that work ought to show “evidence of the artist’s hand” is prominent in Maryann’s sculpture.
