Information provided by the Artist: Geralyn Montano was born in Colorado. She’s a multiracial artist emphasizing her Native American heritage: Dineh (Navajo) from her father's lineage; French, Spanish, Pueblo, and Comanche from her mother's. Montano received her art education from the San Francisco Art Institute, graduating in '97 with a BFA in interdisciplinary arts, painting, and sculpture. Montano’s paintings and sculpture reveal her interest in contemporary Native American culture, myths, and feminism related to historical trauma caused by colonialism. Her first solo exhibition Traded Moons, funded by SFAC, brought light to sex trafficking occurring on reservations. The exhibition debuted at Galería de la Raza. Additional exhibitions at Phillips of New York, Contemporary Jewish Museum SF, SF Arts Commission Gallery, University of Alaska, and the Crocker Art Museum, where her work is represented in the permanent collection. Montano is currently working on a new series inspired by the grandmother spider myth. It will include an inclusive public event to engage the SF community.
